XYON FAQ
We’re here to help you find the answers to your questions about XYON.
Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a medical condition that causes hair loss at the scalp. Alternatively called male pattern baldness, this condition is most likely to impact men with a genetic predisposition to androgen sensitivity. With AGA, hair loss often occurs in an ‘M’-shaped pattern spanning the crown but can also present as thinning at the temples or general loss of volume across the scalp.
Androgenetic hair loss is often associated with higher than normal levels of an androgen called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) at the scalp or a higher concentration of androgen receptor in the scalp. DHT binds to androgen receptors within hair follicles, signaling premature termination of the hair growth cycle and resulting in hair loss.
Individuals with a genetic predisposition are at greater risk of experiencing premature hair loss when DHT levels are elevated and given higher androgen receptor concentration, may experience hair loss even when DHT levels are within a normal range.

It’s important to begin treating AGA as early as possible to prevent permanent hair loss. Certain medications can limit the effects of AGA and are most effective when treatment is begun at the first signs of hair loss. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and managing stress may also reduce the risk of environmental factors negatively impacting your hair.
Reversing hair loss caused by AGA becomes more challenging the longer it goes untreated. Certain drugs have been known to produce hair growth in dormant follicles, but it’s typically not possible to generate new hair growth once follicle death has occurred. Early intervention is therefore critical for best results.
More common than you might think. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reported that around half of all men will have some degree of androgenetic hair loss by 50 years of age. Caucasian men are affected by androgenetic alopecia (AGA) most frequently, with up to 80% of men in this demographic experiencing some degree of hair loss in their lifetime (NIH). AGA is thought to be less common in Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Asian men, although more conclusive data is needed.
40-50% of adult women will experience hair loss resulting from increased androgen activity at the scalp (NIH). The incidence of AGA in nonbinary individuals is unclear and further research should be conducted.

Probably. Your genes at birth influence your susceptibility to AGA, with heritability accounting for around 80% of your overall risk (NIH). Heritable mutations in specific genes can affect how the body processes androgens like DHT and are almost always associated with androgenetic hair loss.
Although men are most likely to suffer from androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in adulthood, women and nonbinary individuals can also experience androgenetic hair loss following puberty.
Maybe not. AGA is typically passed on from your mother, so it isn’t possible to determine heritable risk from your father alone. Males on your mother’s side of the family (ie: her father, brothers and uncles) may be a more accurate representation of your genetic predisposition to AGA.
As early as possible. Medical treatments for AGA are much more effective at preventing or limiting hair loss than generating new growth from dormant follicles. It’s critical that you begin treatment early to reduce the risk of irreversible follicle death and to limit further hair loss.
If you notice that your hair is thinning at the scalp or you find that hair loss is occurring at a higher rate than usual, it is important to consult with a doctor to determine if you have AGA and discuss treatment options. Certain medical conditions including anemia and low levels of thyroid hormone may cause hair loss and these can often be treated.

There are tools available to help you determine the extent of your hair loss. The Hamilton-Norwood scale is a visual guide that can help you assess the severity of your androgenetic alopecia.

Results can vary greatly by treatment, method of drug delivery and individual. Finasteride is the most clinically effective drug approved for the treatment of AGA at a dosage of 1mg/day taken orally. Finasteride targets androgenetic hair loss by reducing levels of an androgen called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) at the scalp.
A recent literature review concluded that both topical and oral finasteride increased hair count and quality at the scalp in men with AGA. Some individuals responded to finasteride treatment in as little as two months, although in most cases, the therapeutic effects of treatment were seen around six months. As with any pharmaceutical drug, individual responses to finasteride treatment may vary.

Topical Finasteride
The risk of experiencing adverse drug reactions to topical finasteride is typically much lower than the risk associated with oral treatment. Most men for example, don’t experience sexual side effects while using topical finasteride to target hair loss.
With any pharmaceutical drug, there is always a risk that you may experience reactions. If your sexual health has been negatively affected by topical finasteride treatment, the effects are usually temporary and generally resolve themselves once treatment has been discontinued. The most common adverse effects observed with topical medicines of any kind, are typically skin reactions such as redness, itching or peeling.
You should speak with your doctor if you are concerned about the side effect profile of finasteride or experience any skin or other changes after starting topical finasteride.

Oral finasteride treatments reduce the overall concentration of DHT in circulation throughout the body. While effective at targeting hair loss, oral finasteride carries a greater risk of experiencing side effects such as lower libido or erectile dysfunction, as a result of general drug action.
Topical finasteride formulations generally aim to reduce drug action throughout the body and lower the risk of side effects. A recent literature review found topical finasteride treatments to be equally as effective as oral route treatment in improving hair density and quality in men with AGA with less of an impact on serum DHT.

To determine if topical finasteride treatment is right for you, it’s best to consult with a doctor who can take your medical history into account and determine if you require a compounded treatment.
No. Topical finasteride reduces levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can cause androgenetic hair loss in particular.
Hair loss resulting from other conditions, medical treatments or procedures, nutritional deficiencies or for any other known reason should not be treated with topical finasteride. You should always consult with a doctor to determine the cause of your hair loss and discuss treatment options.

Most often, medications used to treat AGA improve hair quality and typically increase the number of mature hairs at the scalp. Your hair will probably not return to its original state but should appear thicker, darker and healthier with consistent drug use.
This is normal and indicates that the medication is working. If your hair loss has increased since starting treatment with topical finasteride, you are probably experiencing shedding. Shedding occurs when one hair growth cycle is terminated and mature hairs are lost. This initial hair loss indicates that new growth can occur from active follicles and a hair growth cycle has begun.
Shedding generally stops within three to six months. If your hair loss persists beyond six months after starting treatment with topical finasteride, it is important that you consult with a physician.

Consistent application and continued use of topical finasteride are required to reduce DHT concentrations at the scalp and effectively target androgenetic hair loss. The benefits of topical finasteride typically do not last once treatment has stopped so treatment is required over the longer term.
Continued use of topical finasteride is necessary to maintain hair regrowth that has occurred since beginning treatment and to prevent further hair loss. Once you have stopped using topical finasteride, you can expect your hair to return to its original state prior to starting treatment. You may also experience additional hair loss without active treatment.
Apart from personally disclosing that you are using topical finasteride, there is no way for anyone to tell that you have begun treating your androgenetic hair loss with topical finasteride. The gel is well absorbed, does not leave a greasy film on the skin and does not have a strong scent, so the application of the gel is typically not noticeable at all. The positive effects of topical finasteride treatment on hair count and quality occur gradually and those around you will not see a drastic change overnight.
There are no known drug interactions of clinical significance to topical finasteride treatment.
This drug is contraindicated and should not be used in the following instances:
Both oral and topical finasteride should be used with caution in situations where a woman at home is trying to conceive, is pregnant or breastfeeding. Finasteride is potentially harmful to a developing fetus, so should be kept away from a woman in the above settings where contamination might be harmful. This includes skin, oral or vaginal contamination.
It is important to disclose a complete and current list of supplements and medications you are on when consulting with a physician to determine whether topical finasteride treatment is right for you. It’s also important to inform your physician of whether you cohabitate or are in a relationship with a woman who might be pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.

You can, but we believe you shouldn’t have to. Finasteride is the most clinically effective medication used to treat AGA. Our topical Finasteride Gel with SiloxysSystem™ formulation contains a higher concentration of finasteride than any other topical formulation, at a dilution of 2.5%.
You can. It’s common for hair loss surgeons to recommend treatment with finasteride before performing any surgical procedures and afterwards, once the scalp has healed and can tolerate the application of topical medications. Finasteride targets the cause of androgenetic hair loss and can be very helpful in preventing the negative impact of DHT on hair that has been surgically transplanted.
Finasteride is currently FDA-approved to treat androgenetic alopecia (AGA) at a dosage of 1mg/day administered orally.
Topical finasteride has not yet been approved by the FDA in the treatment of AGA in concentration. Topical formulations containing finasteride must be prescribed by a licensed physician and can only be administered by a compounding pharmacy.

You should only apply topical finasteride to the scalp and use in other areas of the body is not recommended. Topical finasteride treatments were formulated to target hair loss at the scalp by reducing local levels of DHT; a reduction in DHT is not known to stimulate hair growth at any site other than the scalp.
Topical finasteride is generally safe for biological males undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) but has been known to interfere with other biological functions of DHT including prostate growth and facial hair.
If you are currently undergoing HRT, it is important that you disclose this to your doctor to ensure that they can make an informed and unbiased decision when prescribing topical finasteride.
